Life with a character.

In our baking supply drawer, there is a huge spider (not real!), which is Luther's most feared thing in the world.  The reason is there were a few times he dug through, I mean he opened all the lids.  Now, a big pider (it is how he says spider) is watching!

我が家のキッチンの引き出しには、大きなクモがすんでいます。ルーサーの世界で一番怖いもの。小麦粉やらココアやらオートミールやら、なんでもかんでもあけてはひっくり返してのいたずら対策に試してみたこのクモ、効果抜群。恐ろしすぎて、引き出しを開けると逃げていきます。

Last week, Amalie learned about spiders at school. I thought it was cute that she read about spiders to Luther for a good half hour.  

Her super serious lecture was:

"Papa makes a spider web, mama is finding food, this pink one is Amalie, and Luther is this one with polka dots.  We are playing together."

ちょうど先週、アマリが学校でクモについて学んできて、最終日は早速ルーサーとお勉強会。大真面目なその内容は、

「ぱぱ、クモのすをつくる。まま、ごはんをさがす。あまりはピンクで、ルーサーはみずたま。いっしょにあそぶ。」

それを延々10回以上は繰り返し読んでいました。果たして、それが本当に書いてあるのかは謎ですが。

By the way, this day he really wanted to wear a zebra suite and pink shoes!

ちなみにこの日、ルーサーはシマウマのスーツとピンクの靴を着用しないと外に行かないと言い張り、

 

First thing he grabs is of course a stick.  Then, of course he digs dirt.  (Since last summer, we are suffering from gophers.  The beeper spikes don't seem to work.  Is there way to get rid of them?)

外に出ると、まず棒を持ち、土を掘る。（これ、堀ねずみの掘り返した後。低音波のスパイクも効き目なしで、何かいい駆除方法はあるのでしょうか？）

 

And, he is interested in putting make-up on as well.  Today, while I was taking a shower, he used up a couple of Amalie's princess lip gloss, which I can't tell her.  I grabbed my camera, then he was powdering himself with his sister's precious brush set. I don't think Amalie knows that Luther goes thorough her lovely treasure cabinet every morning, then he puts everything back to normal while she is in school.

そんな彼、立派な男子ですが、メイクアップにも興味深々。私がシャワーに入っている間に、アマリのリップグロスを2本使いきり、カメラを向けても今度はアマリの大事に大事にしているブラシセットでパウダリング。まさか学校に行っている間に、ルーサーが宝物のケースをひととおりチェックしてまた元に戻している事は、アマリは知らないと思うし、言えないな。ごめんね。アマリ。

Birthday with Thomas.

ルーサーくん、2歳になりました。いろいろ、いろいろ、思うと感極わります。一年に何回も登場する我が家のおなじみデコレーション、アマリがとても上手に飾り付けてくれました。Ｌ・u・Ｈ・Ｒ・！はアマリのはさみワーク。背の届かないところはパパのお仕事です。

Luther's second birthday.

I still cry once in a while if I think how lucky we are to have another healthy child right here after all the things we went through.  With a little help from her father, Amalie decorated our house by herself.  We were missing some letters, so she made an L, u, H, R and ! for Luther.  By the way, our only decorations for birthdays show up a few times a year, and probably for many more years ...

最近、少しお話ができるようになってきた御本人に、何が食べたいか聞いたところ、

• モーマス（トーマス）
• ライス
• なっとう
• トマト
• ピース（グリーンピース）
• のり
• ミート
• フレンチフライ

とお答えになられたので、ローストビーフを焼いて（焼きすぎちゃった。）微妙な洋風手巻き寿司にしました。ご飯は影山のぞみさんのラッキーベジセブンリゾットを参考に酢飯に蒸したお野菜をまぜて。

I made a western sushi plate.  It's self wrap sushi rolls (everyone gets a side of nori to wrap their own).  I mixed steamed vegies with sushi rice.  It's inspired from Nozomi Kageyama's risotto recipe. 

私としては魚介類やしその葉が欲しい・・・

バースデイボーイは喜んでくれました。

そして、リクエストにお応えしてトーマスケーキ。

ちょっと、硬めに焼いたスポンジをトーマスに造型していきます。

Thomas cake.

I carved a sponge cage to look like Thomas the Tank Engine. 

マシュマロフォンダントでくるんでいきます。本来はもっと厚くするのでしょうけれど、子供達が食べることを考えて、できる限りの薄さで作ります。

I rolled out fondant as thin as possible.  I know my kids would love to eat all, but it's too much sugar and coloring.  If I wanted a perfect look, I would have make it thicker.

ぼくちゃん、ケーキよりブルーベリー。誰にも分けてくれませんでした。結局、食べたのはフルーツだけ。

He loves kiwi fruits, but I guess he loves blueberries more.  He didn't let us eat them.  

 

モーマス、君は走るのかい？

Mo-mas (Luther's word for Thomas), are you running?

After all he didn't even touch the cake.  All he ate was fruits.

そして、こちらのお方、食べたのはフォンダントだけ。

And, all she ate was fondant.

洋ナシのスポンジケーキ、おいしいのになぁ。パパとママがこんなにも食べてしまったよ。

Papa and mama ate this much cake!  I love fruit sponge cake with pears and kiwi.

もちろん、プレゼントはトーマスづくし。ひと時も離れたくないみたいです。なぜか、姉のベッドを私有化してる弟ですが。

Of course, he got a lot of Thomas presents.  He must sleep with Thomas.  However, this is your sister's bed, birthday boy...

It's almost too small for Luther! He is 1 year 11 mo, Amalie was 3 years 11mo in that picture.

Red chair pads.

IKEAの最終処分コーナーで見つけたトリプルクッションのカバー、セクションごとにジッパーがついていて、綿100％。お値段は3ドル。大量購入しました。昨夏、仕入れておいた低反発フォーム（スポンジ？）の出番です。丁度椅子8脚分が5ドル。本来なら15倍位のお値段だろうに、少し日焼けしてしまったそうで、この値下げ。しかも、車屋さんで修理中に、隣の手芸屋さんにぶらりと立ち寄っただけのなんともラッキーなお買い物でした。

On my Last trip to IKEA I found this Triple cushion cover for $3 in the AS-IS corner.  It's 100% cotton, and each section has own zipper.  What could be more perfect than this to make covers for chair pads.  I already had a chunk of memory foam that I purchased last summer.  It was $5 at a fabric store's summer tent sale, which happened to be right next door to the car dealership where we were getting our car fixed.  Luckily, it was just enough to perfectly make 8 chair pads!  How lucky I am.  Memory foam (and even the regular foam) usually costs way more.

First, I made piping.  It's not that difficult to make.  You need to cut fabric at a 45 degree angle to make a strip.  Then, fold it in half, and iron it.  Avoid stretching it while ironing.  Just set the iron down, and move to next spot.

パイピングを作ります。バイヤスに布を切り、椅子のパッドぐるりに足りるように継ぎ足します。椅子が4脚ある場合、8本必要です。そして、半分にアイロンを上から押さえるように、布を引っ張って伸ばさないように当てていきます。

 

After that, sandwich a string inside the fabric strip and sew to hold the string in place.  I tried to sew right the edge of the string.  Again, try not to stretch the fabric.

次は、紐を半分の輪の中に入れ込んで、ぎりぎりのところを縫っておきます。

These are all parts for one chair pad. 

椅子パッドひとつ分の部品です。

 

Sew them together with piping in between.

パイピングをはさみながら、縫っていきます。

The great thing about using these finished cushion covers is that I didn't need to put zippers in.  Such a time and effort saver.

すでにできているクッションカバーをそのまま使うので、ジッパーをつける手間も時間も要りません。考えなくてよし。

I love the contrast of vivid red-orange and navy blue with wood furniture.   They are comfortable, too. 

朱赤と紺色のコントラストが木の家具を明るく見せてくれていい感じ。すわり心地も良し。
