Why am I so busy?

いまだかつて経験したことのない忙しさと疲労感。学校の送り迎えだけで午前中は終わり、午後は子供達のけんかの仲裁をしながら、山積みの作業と家事。ブログの更新も滞っています。母は、カウチ2つ分のスリップカバー作りに追われ、家のリフォームに加えてミシンやらなにやら、まるで泥棒が入ったみたいな室内。ふうぅ。子供達はいたって元気。

I've never experienced this exhaustion and busyness.  Maybe that's not true.  Maybe I'm getting older and not able to handle so many things.  My morning ends with two trips to school, then a mountain full of household chores and some remodel work to fill my afternoon while I separate two monsters from fighting all the time.  My blog is at least two weeks behind.  My mom is sewing new slip covers like she became a sewing machine.  The house is a MESS!  It's like a hurricane just went through.  Huuuu.  How do kids have so much energy?

My shortbread

8 TBS unsalted butter (room temperature)

1/2cup powdered sugar

11/3cup flour

1. Using a rubber spatula, mix butter and powdered sugar into a fluffy cream.
2. Sift flour into the butter mixture by dusting through a mesh colander or sifter.
3. Mix until they are together.
4. Dust the work surface, then roll out the dough to desired diameter.  Wrap in plastic.
5. Rest the dough in the freezer for at least one hour.
6. Cut them and bake in 350 degree oven for 15 to 20 min.

Royal Icing

1 tsp egg white (Pasteurized)

5 TBS powdered sugar

1 to 2 drips of water or lemon juice depending on the softness.

毎年恒例のアップルサイダーパーティー。ご近所さんが食べ物を持ち寄って集まるポットラックパーティー。今年はショートブレッドを焼いてみました。パウダーシュガーに転がして、ロイヤルアイシングでりんごを描いて、でっきあがりー。ドリンクはもちろん絞りたてのアップルサイダー。おちびちゃん達も手伝います。

The best day at the beach.

晴れ女の母が来たとたんに真夏日和。時差ぼけの母には申し訳ないけど、さっそく海に行きました。子供達は遊ぶ。遊ぶ。足がつりそうな程冷たいのに、ずいぶんと長い間波打ち際で遊んでた子供達とパパ。三人とも（んっ。二人は）冷たくないと言い張ってた。冷え性の私とは明らかに違うDNA。

残念なのはカメラ。お気づきの方もいらしゃるかと思いますが、春からずっと、撮影はアマリのカメラ。私たちが奮発して買ったカメラは、不良品であることが発覚。保障期間中だったので、某有名メーカーに送り返したところレンズに大きな傷がついた中古に交換され、またまた送り返したら今度はレンズの間に髪の毛が入り込んだぼろぼろの中古が届き、もめにもめた挙句やっと新品のものに交換してくれました。私達の中では会社そのもの、そして製品に対する信頼はなくなってしまったので、違うメーカーの物を物色中。こうしてる間にも、子供達はどんどん大きくなってしまうのになぁ。

Kichen Remodel Update vol.10-Kitchen Shopping-

This is all of our new kitchen from IKEA.  It's pretty impressive how they pack up everything in flat boxes.  We shopped several kitchen resellers.  We always believed in solid wooden kitchen cabinets, but we found that IKEA has the best kitchen system as well as price.

これがシステムキッチンの全て。こんなに上手に箱に詰めるIKEAってすごい。キッチンは、他でもいろいろ見て回ったんだけど、全てが木でできているからってすばらしい訳でもないし、結局IKEAのキッチンで質も値段も納得。

 

For the countertop, we wanted Numerar, which is 1" thicker, but they were out of it at every store in the US., and they said it won't be available for months.  Lagan is only $39 per sheet, and it's not too bad once it's installed. The only problem is that the longest sheet is 96", and we needed longer.  So, Ryan's craftsmanship came along to put them together without any gap.

カウンタートップは木。ブナの木。本当は分厚い方が欲しかったんだけど、国内全店で品切れでいつ入荷されるのかも分からないという事で少し薄いけど3ｃｍ弱の物を購入。唯一の問題は、一番長いもので246ｃｍなので継ぎ足すのが大変みたいでした。まず、両方の端を完璧にまっすぐ切って、ぴったり合うまでやすりをかけて、下から補強しながら合体して、最後にまたやすりで完璧に仕上げます。

For the backsplash, cement boards were screwed on for tiling.

Our kids have been nesting in this particular cabinet ever since it was installed. 

私たちは必死に作業していますが、子供達はそれなりに楽しんでいます。新しい隠れ家。

Big Helper.

My mom flew here to help us.  She is part of the remodeling team of watching kids, which is the biggest task.  Amalie couldn't wait for her arrival.  She made surprise art projects everyday, and she prepared the guest room.

   

In the afternoon the day before my mom came, Amalie disappeared from sight.  I found her in her bed.  She said she needed to relax, because tomorrow would be the biggest day of her life.

 

Amalie got up early.  She ate breakfast, changed her clothes, went to the bathroom, brushed her teeth, put her shoes on, then waited for us at the door.  WOW!  That never happens.  Just this morning, I had to yell at her to hurry for school after she locked herself in the bathroom for 30min.  Anyway, she got nervous when she found my mom at the airport after all this huge excitement. They were so unnaturally apart for a good hour or so.  As soon as we got home, of course the kids dug into my mom's suitcases.  She brought a couple suitcases full of food, clothes and goodies for us again.  Welcome home, Grandma!

 

お家の改築に加えて、気がついたら一日中食べる時間がない程忙しすぎる生活が続き（私だけ。）ついに母が手伝いに来てくれました。おかげで、すぐに体重増加です。アマリは待ちきれず、毎日プレゼントの製作にせっせと励み、ゲストルームの準備やお掃除を自主的に手伝ってくれたあげく、前日の午後、急にどこにもいなくなったと思ったら自分のベッドで"ビッグデイ"に備えてリラックス中でした。こんなに楽しみにしていたのに、空港で母が出てきたとたんに興奮も緊張も最高潮に。小一時間はぎこちなく距離を保っていたアマリですが、おうちに帰ってきたら、さっそくスースケースをひっくり返す子供達。またまた、自分の物はさておき、子供達に山盛りのお菓子と洋服、その他諸々お楽しみグッズで埋まってた母のスーツケース。ようこそ、グランマ。お世話になるよ！

Kichen Remodel Update vol.9.-Temporary Kitchen-

This is our new temporary kitchen.  Two formerly upper cabinets stuck on top of each other in the corner of the kitchen.  I do dishes in the bathroom sink.  FYI, I clean the sink before using it for food and dishes, and the sponge is for kitchen use only.

取り壊したキャビネットを重ねて、お鍋やら粉類やらその他もろもろ収納。お皿洗いは洗面所で。もちろんスポンジはキッチン専用！リビングにも食器やカラトリーを収納していて、初めの、2，3日はウオサオ。一日中食事を用意して、洗い物をするような生活ぶり。不便だぁ！

Kichen Remodel Update vol.8-Demo ALL GONE-

The main reason of getting everything new is the smell of this old house.  It's probably because the previous owner never cleaned anything anywhere, as well as the age of the house (built in 1952).  We even decided to replace the floor under the cabinet.

なんたって1952年に建ったお家。私たちの前の住人の不潔さも加わり、どうしても気持ち悪くて、どうしても我慢できなくて、基礎の床を残して全て取り替えることにしました。

Before the sink, dishwasher and the counter-top is gone, I cooked a few days worth of meals.  Tons of rice, egg drop spinach sweet and sour soup, carrot portage, coleslaw, fried chicken and cauliflowers, yakitori chicken, beef and green peppers, daikon radish salad, spinach, and pickled vegetables.

全てがなくなる前に最後の悪あがき。チキンのから揚げとカリフラワーのカリカリ揚げ、焼き鳥、チンジャオロースー、ほうれん草の御浸し、大根サラダ、コールスロー、野菜のピクルス、にんじんのポタージュ、ほうれん草と卵の中華スープ、そしてお鍋いっぱいの白米。ラザニアは冷凍してあるし、紙皿、紙コップも買っておいた。どうにか、無事に食いつなげますように。

Kichen Remodel Update vol.7.-Paint-

 

I look really mad, but I am really concentrating, so I don't miss spots.  The thing on my head is Amalie's old skirt.  I don't know why, but usually after painting ceilings and walls, my head is covered with paint.

仏頂面の私。塗り残しがないように、マッハのスピードで手を動かしつつも真剣。なぜかいつも髪の毛にペンキがついてしまうので、アマリの古いスカートでほっかむり。

We chose the color of pure white.  It was platinum before.  It took 4 coats of primer and paint to make it back to ultra white.  phewwww~
真っ白にしました。プラチナ色だったからか下地を塗った後ペンキも3回塗らないと純白にならなくて丸2日格闘。フ~。

簡単そうに見えて難しい。何度も何度も同じ事を繰り返す時間のかかる工程。忍耐の一言かも。

Upper cabinets needed to be taken down as well as the soffit (box of dead space).

Then of course we found a problem.  The main power line is slightly running through part of the soffit.   So, the little box needed to be built.
