Summer break.

全く音沙汰なくて、ブログをチェックしてくれている皆様、ごめんなさい。

私は無事です。日に日に強くたくましく回復しています。

アマリの学校生活も無事に終わり、おもいっきり夏休みをしています。

いやーそれにしても、２年生になると学期末テストや宿題の量が厳しかったです。アマリも毎日夜遅くまでお勉強してがんばっていました。来年、大丈夫かな？

頑張ったぶん、毎日いそがしくしています。時間が足りなーい。

写真はたくさん撮っていて書きたい事も沢山あるんですけど、PCに向かうかわりに子供達の夏休みを優先させてもらおうかな。と思っています。

なので、後で、たっぷり思い出日記書いていきますね。

For those who often check my blog, I'm sorry I am not updating at all.  

I am unbelievably recovering everyday.

Right now, we are enjoying summer break 200%.

Amalie's school ended 10 days ago.  She enjoyed everything, and it was more than awesome for her to soak in Japanese lifestyle, but since it was the end of the 1st quarter, there were tests everyday along with loads of homework.  She stayed up till 10 pm to study even though I repeatedly said I don't care about her scores.  (Her usual bed time is 8 pm)  She is tough, and most of her math tests were 100 points....WOW!  Anyway, I don't know if she can even catch up to next year...

Well, we are seriously super busy.  The kids want to do and see so many things, and I have so many errands to run.  I've been taking photos here, and I have lots of things to write, but for mow, I'd like to focus on the kids' summer break instead of sitting on this computer.  There are only 10 days left here.  I will write a fabulous journal later.  

This exact wall was still here.  I was playing right on this same asphalt 30+ years ago.

Best friends forever!

東京都内でもこんなに自然がいっぱい。
週末は高校時代からのお友達のお家にお泊りしてきました。

Last weekend, we had a sleep-over at my friends' house.  We've been friends for over twenty years!  Wow, it makes me feel really old... Now, she is living in a suburb of Tokyo with her fabulous  family.  It still has lots of nature around the city, and we had so much fun!

クワガタまで捕れちゃうんです。シーズン中はカブトムシが４０匹くらい捕れるんですって。お友達パパにいっしょに連れて行ってもらった子供達にとって一生の思い出です。デパートで買うものだと思っていた私にも、オオッってな感じでした。

Have you seen this?  It's a stag beetle.  These ones and Japanese rhinoceros beetles are really expensive.  All I knew was that we used to buy them at department stores.  BUT, my friend's husband and the kids went to get them in the morning in the nearby forest, and they came home with two of them plus a drone beetle.  How wonderful of an experience for Amalie and Luther!

ママになった私達、まったく違う人生を歩いているけど何十年たってもなんにもずれない友情が本当に嬉しいひとときでした。ともだちって宝物ですね。

何年も会っていないちびっこ達も、まるで幼馴染です。ずっと、ずっと、お友達でいてほしいな＾＾

Another friend joined us on the first day, so the three of us had such a dreamy time.  After decades of knowing each other, we've been through completely different seasons of our lives, but still we haven't changed anything at all.  They are my treasures.  We'll be probably sipping a cup of tea and chatting and laughing for many more years to come.  

This morning.

日本に来てあっという間に１０日。

アマリは本当によくがんばって、去年よりはすんなりと小学校生活を送っています。お友達も離れていた時間を忘れるくらい馴染んでくれて嬉しい限りです。

アメリカでは保護者がいっしょに行動しなければいけない法律なので、私の方が慣れない子供達だけの登下校。今日も、ひっそり後ろから送り届けてしまいました。

そのあとは、母といっしょにウォーキング。

都会でも時々、本当にきれいだなと思う景色に出会います。

我が家のおやつに良く登場する相模屋の葛餅。創業３００年近いみたいです。

この道しるべも同じだけここに立っているんですね。

触ってみたらなんだか不思議な感じです。

これ、自宅の照明に欲しい＾＾

もうすぐ夏ですね。今でもワクワクなのに、どうしよう！？

ただいまー。

お留守番のルーサー君。ジョギングストローラーがないので連れて行けず、ちょっとかわいそう。

この後、母が電車を見にお散歩に行ってくれました。

Red demon, blue demon.

In Japan, we celebrate the day before spring begins.  It's called setubun.  (If you are curious, check this article.) We throw soy beans to the outside saying "Demons out!", then throw beans to inside while saying "Luck inside!"  Holly tree and sardine heads are supposed to keep bad luck away.  This year, I strongly prayed 'no more cancer and everyone's good health'.

節分でした。みんなの健康を強く念じながら、ヒイラギといわし（アマリが折り紙で折ってくれた金魚ですけど・・・）を 飾りました。どうか、病気はもう入ってきませんように。

そして、オニさん達です。赤オニさんは金棒と鎖についた鉄球まで作って本気です。

本気度が満点すぎて、やさぐれてます。

そして、ナイス青オニさん。オニのお面作れるなんてすごいじゃない！私はひたすら感動。夜ごはんの後、みんなで思いっきり豆まきをしました。本当に、心の底から願います。
「鬼は外！福は内！！！」

Japanese crafts.

Aren't they pretty?  These key chains are made out of paper ropes.  

縁起のいい水引細工を母の友人にいただきました。かわいいでしょ。実はこれ、子供達がアドベントカレンダーのクリスマスツリーのオーナメントにしてしまいました。それはそれで、とってもおしゃれなツリーになったんです。本当にすてき。

そして、お正月用にはこんなアレンジメント。写真がぼけてますけど。。。

Fireworks and people, people, people.

Look at this field filled with people.  It's not only here, but the whole riverside, street, and everywhere is packed with people.  I still can't believe we got there with the kids.  I was wondering about what was in my dad's backpack when we left our house, and he kept walking into this craziness, then here we were with a picnic blanket, bug spray, and icy cold spots drinks came out of my dad's magical backpack.

This is a local one, but they shot 5000 fireworks in 30 min.  This is the best I can do with my camera without a tripod. It just was amazing!

「パンがおしりだぁ！」と大喜びのアマリと、たくさん、たくさん、パンを焼きました。室温33度、湿度50％、生地が乾燥してしまうので窓もしめて、まるでパン屋さんの発酵ルームにいるみたいです。

二次発酵中。日本の猛暑ならでは。そこいら辺で発酵してしまいます。オーブンを入れたら、更にサウナ状態。パン屋さん日和ですね。

本当にパン屋さんみたい。いつもの白パン、ツナマヨコーン、シナモンツイスト、パイナップルジャムにクリームチーズとココナッツのパンです。仕上げに溶き卵を塗るのを忘れたのが、私的にとっても残念。手前中央にあるのが、アマリ巨匠のギョーザジャムパンです。家の気温が一気に上がるので、家族には迷惑なのですけど、また作ろう。

Zoo at night.

Ueno Zoo is open until eight o'clock for six days in the summer.  During summer break, I heard it is packed with people, but we went there a couple of days before the Japanese version of Memorial Day.  Lots of people leave the city to travel back to their hometown, so during this time of the year and around the New Year, it gets pretty empty.  We got there at five o'clock, and there was no more hot sunshine, but a nice breeze that went through the park, the animals were very active, and it was perfect.

お盆ですね。ふらりと通りに出ても電車に乗っても、人が少なくてすいています。この時を待って、我が家は動物園に行ってきました。夏の間6日間だけ夜の8時まで開いているので、日が陰る夕方からのお出かけです。今まで見たことのないくらい動物たちが活動的で、動物園最適日和でした。

パンダは見逃せません。3年越しの願いが叶ったアマリは感激。

そして、この記念撮影も欠かせないのかな。せっかくだから。ものすごいバックグランドですよね。

The mom and baby monkey were so cute.

赤ちゃんモンキーもかわいかった。動きが2歳のルーサーと似てました。ママ大変なんだろうな。

We ended up being at the zoo for three hours.  On the way to the train station, we walked by this pond of lotus flowers.  You can't really see the blossoms, but it was beautiful.  You also might not be able to see stars here, but I feel at home when I'm out in a night like this with lots of lights.     

ささっと行って帰ってくるはずが、結局8時までいた私たち。帰り道、不忍池に浮かぶハスの花のピンクと光を反射する葉が夜風に吹かれて、本当に美しい。その奥に見えるガラスハウスや建物の明かりや明るい夜空、そしてまるで昼間のような喧騒に、私、なんだかほっとするんです。星は見えないけど、やっぱりここが好きなんでしょうね。

Park after raining.

This LOOONG roller slider was on the to-do list while we are in Japan, but since the weather has been hot, we haven't even been able to touch any metal until last week.  This day, it was raining all day until 4pm.  When the rain stopped, we put our junkiest clothes on, jumped on our bikes, and dashed to this park.  I found this picture in my dad's camera.  I thought it's funny that Luther is even copying us.  

子供達のやりたい事リストに入っていたローラースライダー。毎日の灼熱であきらめていたのですが、先週の雨の日の夕方、行くなら今しかないと即決し、一番汚いお洋服を着て、自転車に飛び乗って、父の案内する近道を通って到着！父のカメラに入っていたこの写真、ちびっこルーサーもちゃんと参加してておもしろい。私も私ですが・・・。

After playing at the slide, the kids played on the sand for a while during the sunset.  

滑り台の後はお決まりの砂遊び。運河の向こうの夕焼けがきれい。

It looks nice, but it is tiny, stinky and a man-made beach in a gray-water canal of Tokyo bay, although we found lots of fish and crabs.  It used to be a swimming beach until someone got hurt.  I wonder if all the smell and grayness was because of the hard rain...

雨のせいか、水は灰色だし臭かったのですけど、お魚と蟹がたくさんいました。そんな臭い波打ち際で父が蟹をキャッチ。グランパに反抗してばかりのアマリも、この時ばかりはちょっと尊敬。夜、寝る前も語っていました。子供達は遊んでほしいんだろうな。グランパがんばれ。

Japanese Inspiration.

ただの石階段ですが、すてきです。大昔に石を切って手で作った階段を、いまだ普通に使っているのですよね。歴史色なんだろうな、この風情。

そして、我が家が計画しては後回しになっているフェンス作りの参考になるのかならないのか、こんなフェンスはアメリカでは浮いてしまうのか、ものすごくインスピレーションを感じる日本のフェンス。竹、いいですねぇ。

思い切ってこんな日本庭園風の前庭にするのもいいかもしれないな。どうでしょう。

My No Kneed Bread

3c bread flour

1/4tsp yeast

1tsp salt

11/2TBS sugar

170ml water

1.Combine all ingredients in a big bowl until it gets mixed.

2.Wrap with plastic wrap, and let it sit for 12 to 16 hours.

3.Pour into dusted baking pans, and dust with flour.

4.Cover with a clean dish towel, and let it sit for 2 hours.

5.Cover with foil (or if you have a cast iron pot with a lid, it works the best), then bake it at 500゜for 25 min, then uncovered for 10 min.

お家でできる窯焼きパン。

強力粉　720ｃｃ

イースト　1/4

塩　1tsp

砂糖　11/2

水　170ml

1.大きなボウルに全部入れて、ヘラで全体を混ぜる。こねなくて大丈夫。

2.ラップをして、今なら室温で１２時間から１６時間寝かせる。

3.焼き型に粉をふって、流し込む。上からも粉をふる。

4.きれいなフキンをかけて２時間寝かせる。

5.アルミホイルで蓋をして（ルクルセなど蓋つきのお鍋があればそれが一番）、２５０゜（家のオーブ　ンの最高温度なので）で２５分焼き、蓋をとって好きな硬さになるまで焼く。私は柔らかめ（といっても固め）で１０分焼きました。

キャストアイロンのお鍋で焼くと、もっと本格的に窯焼きパンになります。でも、これで十分。おかずのキャベツと豚肉、そしてクリームチーズをごろごろのせてガブリ。いつもと少し違うパンです。

Going out by myself.

先週、がんばりすぎたアマリが熱をだしていたので、おひとり様で美術館に行ったり、その他もろもろの用事を済ませてきました。

まずは、フェルメール。東京都美術館です。この立て看板があるところから、建物の入口までかなりの距離があるのですが、これって本来何分待ちなのだろう。中に入っても、絵画の質感やタッチは全く持って見えないほどの混雑ぶりで、でも、遠目でもこの《真珠の首飾りの少女》は美しかった。本当は、もっとゆっくりアマリといっしょに来たかったな。

I really wanted to take Amalie with me to this exhibit, but she had a high fever for most of last week.  Johannes Vermeer's `Girl With a Pearl Earring' came to Japan.  It was beautiful, but I could only see it from about 10 feet away.  It was super packed with people.  This sign is standing to tell people how long the line is. From this spot to the door is at least 200 yard away.  People told me it is sometimes two hours to get in.

その後、この街へ。優雅にショッピングならいいんですけど、頼んでおいたものを受け取ったり、夫の頼まれごとを済ませたり、素敵なお店や溢れるかわいいものたちに後ろ髪をひかれながら、早足で歩いてきました。

After the museum, several train stops away, I went to Ginza.  I had to pick up my newly sized wedding ring, which was too tight after all those DIYs.  And, there were some other errands to run.  I wish I could shop here.  There are so so so so so many pretty things everywhere. 

そして、最後に寄ったのはここです。人生初めての献血。少し、怖かったけど大丈夫でした。少しでも誰かの役に立てるのですよね。私も大量出血して、輸血を用意してもらったこともあったので（結局はしなかったけど）、その心細さがほんの少しはわかります。こんなに簡単にできる事で命を繋げる事ができるなんて一度は献血しなきゃ。ずっと気になっていた事のひとつが果たせました。

At last where I headed was here, Red Cross blood donation.  I always wanted to do this.  After the earthquake and tsunami disaster a year and a half ago, we couldn't donate much of anything, so I was always trying to think of something I can do.  It doesn't have to be for the earthquake and tsunami, but someone can live with this small help we can do, right?
